Must-Visit Iceland Waterfalls

Updated: May 3

  1. Skogafoss

Located in Southern Iceland, Skogafoss is about a 37 minute drive to the town of Vik.

This massive waterfall is undoubtably a popular destination for travelers --and for good reason! As we approached Skogafoss, we were welcomed by a vibrant rainbow stretching across the falls.

A unique feature of Skogafoss is the opportunity to hike to the top of the waterfall. The climb was somewhat challenging, with more than 500 steps to reach the top. Pace yourself and keep hydrated! The view from the top is breathtaking. It was an incredibly surreal experience to be surrounded by mossy mountains as the Skoga River cascaded down the cliff.

  2. Seljalandsfoss

Seljalandsfoss is situated in Southern Iceland, approximately 56 minutes away from the town of Vik. One thing I love about this waterfall is that you can walk completely behind it! For those adventurous travelers, there is a pathway down to the base where you can get really close to the falls!

Make sure to wear your waterproof gear while visiting Seljalandsfoss!

  3. Gljufabui

Just a 8 minute walk from Seljalandsfoss you can find this hidden treasure, Gljufabui!

Tucked away in a cannon, this secret waterfall is absolutely stunning. This waterfall is might not be as crowded but is one of the most beautiful in my opinion.

There is a bolder to stand on right under the falls for the perfect picture opportunity.

Gljufabui holds a special place in my heart because it's where I got engaged! It was a magical moment I'll always remember! If you are already checking out Seljalandsfoss, you cannot miss out on Gljufabui!

  4. Kvernufoss

Kvernufoss, just 32 minutes from Vik, is another waterfall I love!

The hike to the falls takes about 10 minutes from the parking area. The journey is as stunning as the waterfall itself. It felt like being on a movie set—the scenery is INCREDIBLE! I remember stopping multiple times to just take it in the landscape as much as I could.

Like Seljalandsfoss, you can also walk behind this waterfall for expectational views and photos! I was surprised that this waterfall was not crowded considering how amazing it is --definitely worth the stop!

  5. Kirkjufellsfoss

Located on the stunning Snaefellsnes Peninsula is Krikjufellsfoss.

The waterfall itself may not be as striking as some of the others mentioned, but the landscape with Mt. Kirkjufell directly in the background is what really makes this stop spectacular. It snowed that morning in the peninsula which left a light dusting on Mt. Kirkjufell which made the scene even more picturesque.

Only 5 minutes from Kirkjufellsfoss, you'll find the quaint fishing town of Grundarfjörður, home to a delightful Colombian coffee shop named Valeria Kaffi. I suggest stopping by for a delicious coffee to go, perfect for energizing your exploration of the Snaefellsnes Peninsula!

  6. Bruarfoss

If you are planning on checking out the golden circle -- Bruarfoss is the perfect addition to your day!

Known for its bright blue water, this waterfall is unlike any of the others! We parked at the close parking lot which allowed us to make it to the falls in about 5 minutes. If you are interested in a hike, you can park at the Bruarfoss Trail Parking and endeavr a 2 mile hike that has additional waterfalls along the way! Since we were strapped for time we decided to do the quick walk to the falls.

In the image on the left, we are standing on a bridge with the water rushing by. This was one of my fiancé's favorite waterfalls!
